Cameron Clayton, CEO/ General Manager of The Weather Company spoke to the Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce breakfast on March 14, 2017 at the Doubletree Hotel, Brookhaven, GA. A room packed with 80 plus members and guests learned that the Weather Channel started 34 years ago where their mission was to serve as the “worlds best forecaster.” Science and accuracy was the main focus. Out of 2.2 billion locations and 40 billion weather requests per day, The Weather Company predictions are up 10%, being correct 86% of the time.
Clayton predicted substantial growth of The Weather Company and that they need to add hundreds of new employees over the next few years – thus the need for the larger space in Brookhaven. The City’s location, convenience, Marta access and professional growth were factors in the Weather Company’s decision to locate here. Purchased by IBM in 2015, innovation and dimensional operation proved that incidents like insurance fraud are shown through Internet connection in cars being able to detect it being 56 degrees when said to have “slipped on ice.” He also explained how three years ago, The Weather Company changed its mission to “map the atmosphere” to help people make better decisions kind of how Google likes to “organize the world.”
The Weather Company’s revenue primarily comes from advertising and business-to-business. However, revenue is also earned from broadcast stations, retail, and ground transportation. Clayton also informed members and guests of flight operations and how The Weather Company has significant input to impact flights schedules based on their accurate forecast resulting in saved money.
20% of Americans use The Weather Company app on their phone before their feet even touch the floor. Through agreeing to a biometric pressure sensor in your phone, The Weather Channel knows each person’s location, altitude, when inside or out, upon setting up your profile based on a current location. Being a part of IBM’s Watson Group, their mission was changed again to “augment people to make better decisions” to empower the world. Chamber of Commerce members CMIT and First Pro Inc. sponsored this event and brought valued information as well as promotional pieces.
